February 2007 Archives

Martin tried (and failed) to get Andrew Lansley to give way.

Later, he had more success and brought up the case of Bolingbroke Hospital saying that Wandsworth council were saying that the services were being closed down when actually they were being moved to alternative sites.

Gweirdo casts his eye over Peter Hain's bid for the deputy leadership of the Labour Party. Martin Linton gets a mention.

Hain has also targeted Tom Levitt, Martin Linton and Laura Moffatt to join him, which is a big problem because they serve as PPS to Hilary Benn, Harriet Harman and Alan Johnson respectively, all three of whom are (like Hain) declared candidates for Deputy Leader.

Sadiq Khan on Martin Linton

Sometimes it's easy to think that Tooting MP Sadiq Khan writes more about Martin Linton than Martin Linton does. Here are extracts from three recent entries from Sadiq's blog.

On Sunday, I spent the afternoon in Balham calling on local residents and listening to their priorities and concerns. The feedback from the doorstep was extremely positive. There was, however, a real anger at the Tory Council’s decision to make massive cuts to Battersea Art Centre, which could lead to it closing down, the threatened closure of Wandsworth Museum and cuts in Youth provision.

I am working with the Labour Group of Councillors, Martin Linton (MP for Battersea) and Wandsworth residents to try and make the Council think again. You can see the EDM I have sponsored with Martin by clicking HERE.

Thursday 8th February

On Saturday I joined Martin Linton MP, actress Prunella Scales and Wandsworth residents in a mock funeral outside Battersea Arts Centre. As I have written before, the Tory council have taken the disgraceful decision to cut the grant of BAC and start charging commercial rents to this superb local cultural asset. Our campaign continues to try and persuade the Tory Party locally and nationally of their folly. Further details can be found by going to the BAC website www.bac.org.uk. You can see a photo of our most recent campaigning by clicking HERE.

Single Payment Scheme - 1 Feb 2007

Martin Linton asked David Milliband (Secretary of State, Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) if he will publish payments made under the common agricultural policy single payment scheme by constituency.

David Milliband replied that the 2005 figures have not yet been analysed and that once this work has been completed, they will decide on the appropriate level of detail to publish.

Martin Linton came back and said that as this costs £16 billion each year the payments should be identified, at least, by constituency.

David Milliband denied that the figure was as large as that and said that it was most important to ensure that the payments were correct before ensuring that the information about the payments was published.

Martin Linton has written an Early Day Motion about the proposed closure of Wandsworth Museum. This is what it says:

That this House regrets the proposal from Wandsworth Council to close Wandsworth Museum; values the work of the museum's small but dedicated staff; notes the museum's success in attracting 30,000 visits last year, including 8,300 school-children; commends the museum for its success in attracting ethnic minority visitors and celebrating immigrant communities in the borough from the Huguenots to the Windrush; congratulates it on being one of only six local authority-funded museums in London to be granted Accredited Status by Museums London; and urges the Council to think again and come forward with options as the basis for consultation with the Wandsworth Historical Society, civic societies and other stakeholders.
