December 2008 Archives

The Surrey Comet has a review of the year which mentions both Wandsworth Labour MPs, Martin Linton and Sadiq Khan.

Wandsworth's two Labour MPs, who campaigned side by side with residents to save local post offices, have been labelled hypocrites, after they backed the Government's plans to close branches.

Tooting's Sadiq Khan and Battersea's Martin Linton were accused of betraying communities last week after they voted against a motion to stop the closures.

A Conservative motion to suspend the post office closure programme was narrowly lost by 288 votes to 268 on Wednesday night, with 19 Labour MPs revolting.

Both MPs claimed they did not back the Tory motion because it was flawed and said they would continue working to save branches in Battersea and Tooting.

Martin Linton chaired this debate and made a number of lengthy and interesting speeches. You can find his speeches here, here, here, here and here. The debate was about encouraging Israel to stop building more settlements in the occupied territories.

College Merger One Step Closer

The Local Guardian runs a story about a proposed merger of South Thames College with Merton College. Martin Linton is in favour of the merger.

"I think South Thames College does a very good job for Wandsworth and a merger with Merton College makes good sense.

"They complement each other and will be able to provide a wider range of courses and achieve even better results as a single organisation."

Starting Again

Apologies for the fact that this blog rather died out over the last couple of years. I went on a rather long holiday, got a bit behind and never really caught up.

But I'm going to have another go. I'll start by posting the stories that have come in today and will hopefully be able to keep up to date. I've got all of the old stories still bookmarked, so maybe one day I'll go back and post them here.
